Clássicos no fundo das minas
uma história enterrada

Ao longo deste texto, visitaremos vários locais de interação entre os trabalhadores britânicos das minas e os clássicos da Grécia e de Roma. Além de simplesmente atestar sua existência, a avaliação dessas interações lançará alguma luz sobre o curioso apelo da antiguidade greco-romana ao trabalhador da mineração da época. Antes disso, devo contextualizar um pouco essa linha de pesquisa de nicho. A pesquisa sobre os “clássicos dos mineradores” foi realizada enquanto trabalhava com Edith Hall em seu projeto financiado pelo AHRC “Classics and Class in Britain 1789-1939”. O projeto foi planejado “para provocar uma mudança na percepção da história dos estudos clássicos britânicos, afastando-se de uma tradição conservadora de elitismo institucionalizado em direção a uma história mais esclarecedora de práticas culturais amplamente inclusivas e inspirada criatividade” (Stead; Hall, 2015, p. 19).
