La dualidad antitética en In Rufinum de Claudiano

Tras morir Teodosio en 395 d.C., el Imperio romano se dividió definitivamente entre la Pars Occidens – bajo Honorio y su regente militar Estilicón – y la Pars Oriens – gobernada por Arcadio y su ministro Rufino. En este contexto, Claudiano llega a la corte occidental y, a pedido de Estilicón, compone In Rufinum (396-397 d.C.), una invectiva épica que relata el ascenso, enfrentamiento y muerte de Rufino. El presente trabajo pretende demostrar cómo el poema, mediante un esquema que responde a la dualidad antitética, representa la crisis del imperio y configura un universo poético en el que realidad y ficción se entrelazan al dividir el mundo entre la oscuridad del inframundo y la luminosidad heroica. Para ello, se analizará, por una parte, la representación del Hades como una fuerza desbordante que irrumpe en la superficie terrestre a través de Rufino – la Discordia encarnada – y los bárbaros; por otra parte, la configuración de Estilicón como el héroe lumínico capaz de restablecer la Concordia en el territorio imperial.
